How To Plan Family Holiday Traditions You Will Keep
The best family traditions are not the biggest ones. They are the ones you can do every year without dreading them. Many families end up with a pile of holiday ideas and no plan, so December fills up with things that nobody enjoys. Here is how to choose a few traditions your family loves and set them up so they last.
Step 1: Ask your family what they love
Sit down together and ask each person: "What is one thing you want to do this holiday season?" Write every answer down. Kids will often name small things, like hot chocolate on the first snowy night or hanging a certain ornament. Those small things are the heart of a tradition.
Step 2: Pick a few, not all
Choose three to five traditions. Pick a mix: one for the start of the season, one for the middle, one for the big day itself and one for the days after. Fewer traditions means you can do each one well.
Step 3: Put them on the calendar
A tradition that is not on the calendar is a wish. Write each one on your family calendar right away, and note what you need to prepare. A cookie night needs ingredients. A family movie night needs a plan for who picks the movie.
Step 4: Build in countdowns
Countdowns make the season feel special. A paper chain, a list of daily activities or a box of cards you open one at a time all work. Pick the form that fits your family, and keep each day's task short.
Step 5: Include the whole family
Give every person a job. Older kids can run the music or plan a game. Younger kids can set the table or hang decorations. People enjoy traditions more when they help create them.
Step 6: Keep a record
After each tradition, write one line in a notebook or a family journal: what you did, who was there and one funny thing. Next year you will remember what worked and what to change.
A sample holiday plan
- Week one: Decorate together and choose your countdown.
- Week two: Bake and share treats with neighbors.
- Week three: Family movie night and handmade gifts.
- Week four: Special dinner, then a quiet evening together.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Saying yes to every idea. Pick the ones that matter to your family.
- Making it perfect. Kids remember the laughter, not the decorations.
- Skipping rest. Leave a few empty evenings in your plan.
- Forgetting to write it down. You will want to repeat your favorites.
